The Network of the Italian Communities
With the aim of ensuring the protection and enhancement of the UNESCO recognition, to enable monitoring of the initiatives of preservation and enhancement of the Mediterranean diet and maximize the indirect benefits from the recognition and allow its wider sharing in the wider national community, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the scientific contribution of the University of Rome Sapienza Unitelma and Study Centre for the Mediterranean diet of Pollica, it was created on September 18 2015 a network of Italian communities of the Mediterranean Diet Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
The network of the communities of the Mediterranean Diet, formed by the signatories of the Charter of the Mediterranean diet, is made up of institutions, research organizations and civil society. The components of these three categories, meet specific requirements to be demonstrated by filling a format and submitted to the Ministry, can claim the title of communities of the Mediterranean Diet and UNESCO Heritage will collaborate with the Ministry and with the community to emblematic 'activation of virtuous path of preservation and enhancement of the UNESCO recognition.
These communities will have to especially contribute to the fulfillment of the commitments taken on by the Italian State and by the Emblematic Communities in the UNESCO approved dossier in November 2010, and at a later stage in December 2013, and launch informative and promotional programs to spread awareness related to the UNESCO Mediterranean Diet Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, according to the multidimensional nature of the element.
The protection and the promotion of values and social sharing, spread by awareness, nutritional and sustainable development education, by means of different instruments, will be essential objectives for the future of the Network of Italian Communities. The network will have to plan future activities of safeguarding and promotion of the Mediterranean diet as a recognized UNESCO element, according to the international legislations in force.
The Charter of the Mediterranean diet is open for signature by all those persons who can demonstrate the fulfillment of the requirements by sending to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for a specific format.
Following the mapping of the Italian communities, which since 2010 have been creating a path for the enhancement and preservation of the Mediterranean Diet as indicated in the MEDDIET project, the network’s nucleus was established during the first meeting of the UNESCO Mediterranean Diet Network of Communities on May 5, 2015, with the September EXPO 2015 in mind.
The 18 September 2015 at EXPO Milan the data map was signed by the founders of the community network of the Italian communities of the Mediterranean diet Heritage UNESCO:

- The International Study Centre on the Mediterranean diet "Angelo Vassallo";
- National Association of Oil City;
- Cluster Bio-Mediterranean;
- CNR - National Research Council;
- Eco-museum of the Mediterranean Diet of Poplars;
- International Foundation of the Mediterranean diet;
- Forum of Mediterranean Food Cultures;
- International Forum of the Mediterranean diet of Imperia;
- Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari;
- MedEatResearch - Centre for Social Research on Mediterranean Diet University Suor Orsola Benincasa;
- University of Milan-Bicocca;
- University of Rome Sapienza Unitelma.
